ERO Reviews of Early Childhood Services
ERO has recently revised its approach to early childhood service reviews. The new review framework and evaluation indicators are included in one document, ERO’s Approach to Reviews in Early Childhood Services (Draft) 2012 and apply to most early childhood services.*
New review return times for early childhood services
As part of this revision, ERO has introduced four different review return times for early childhood services.
From May 2013, the review return time will depend on how well placed your service is to promote positive learning outcomes for children. The four options are:
- Very well placed – The next ERO review in four years
- Well placed – The next ERO review in three years
- Requires further development – The next ERO review within two years
- Not well placed - The next ERO review in consultation with the Ministry of Education

ERO's Approach to Reviews in Early Childhood Services (Draft) 2012
This is a draft document and we welcome any comments on its content, design and overall useability from early childhood services having a review and from other interested individuals and groups.
For parents, whānau, aiga and staff of early childhood services having a review
You have an opportunity to contribute to the review process. If your early childhood service is under review, click on the nearest ERO office to have your say. You will need to include the name of the service, your name and your relationship to the service (staff, parent, caregiver, grandparent etc).
Please note that we do have a separate complaints process. The Education Review Office cannot comment on the personal employment matters of an individual.
*We have separate review procedures for kōhanga reo. Home-based education and care services and hospital-based education and care services will still be reviewed under the 2002 procedures.
