ERO's evaluation indicators and frameworks for school and kura reviews are available online and as booklets. All schools and kura are sent copies before their Education Review but feel free to contact us if you would like more.
Before a review ERO asks boards of trustees and whānau of kura kaupapa to complete a statement that assures ERO of its compliance with its legal obligations and official requirements. The Assurance Statement includes a checklist, which the appropriate body completes and returns to ERO.
Change to Board Assurance Statement for Schools and Whānau Assurance Statement for Kura (effective from Term 4, 2012)
In August 2012, the Minister of Education announced the Government’s response to the recommendations of the Ministerial Inquiry into the Employment of a Convicted Sex Offender in the Education Sector.
As part of this response, the Education Review Office will be seeking assurance from schools and kura about the quality of their processes for appointing staff.
To do this ERO has made a significant change to its Guidelines for Board Assurance Statement (BAS), Whānau Assurance Statement (WAS) and Self-Audit Checklists in respect to the employment practices in schools and kura. There is a brief discussion in the Guidelines (Section 4 – Personnel Compliance Guide) about what best practice should look like in making staff appointments, and then check points in the Self-Audit Checklists (Section 4 – Personnel) drawing from the Personnel provisions in relation to the education service contained in the State Sector Act 1988, National Administration Guideline 3, and Ministry of Education and New Zealand School Trustees Association guidance papers.
This change took effect from Term 4, 2012.
