Review framework and evaluation indicators

ERO’s frameworks for reviews explain the review process in a transparent and easy-to-understand way. The evaluation indicators are used to inform the judgements ERO makes when reviewing. They help early childhood services understand the basis for ERO’s judgements.

ERO finalised and published its revised methodology for reviewing home-based education and care services in early 2016.

Self reports for home-based education and care services

ERO asks early childhood services to complete and return a self report before their review. This gives you the opportunity to tell us about your context and how you promote positive outcomes for children. The information in the self report will help your ERO review team to take an integrated approach to external review and internal evaluation, and to support ongoing development in your early childhood service.

There are different versions of the self report. Please select the self report that applies to your review:

Statistical profile form

Early childhood services must complete and return a statistical profile form before their review. The information provided should be as accurate and up-to-date as possible.

Assurance statement

Before a review we also ask the governing or managing body of an early childhood service or kōhanga reo to complete a statement and checklist that assures ERO of your compliance with legal obligations and official requirements.

You may also find the assurance statement and checklist below useful in your own internal evaluation.

Handbook of Contractual Obligations and Undertakings

The Education Review Office produces the Handbook of Contractual Obligations and Undertakings for early childhood services. This has been compiled as a reference to the relevant legislation and other legal requirements of early childhood services that exist as at the date of publication.

Volume I of this Handbook, which was based on the 1998 early childhood centres regulations, is superseded by the current Volume II. It is updated regularly.

Letter to parents, whānau and staff

Below is a letter that you can display and distribute to your staff, parents and whānau that tells them what we, ERO, want to find out during a review and how they can get involved.

You can either complete the questionnaire online or download it as a Word document to discuss and complete as a group.

Please email completed Word versions of the survey to info@ero.govt.nz or post them to Feedback Questionnaire, Evaluation Services, Education Review Office, Box 2799, WELLINGTON 6140.
