Māori medium kura are reviewed by Te Uepū ā-Motu, ERO’s Māori Review Services team. ERO publishes its reports on these kura in te reo Māori and in English.
ERO and Te Rūnanga Nui o Ngā Kura Kaupapa Māori have developed a review process for Te Aho Matua kura, and special review material is available (see below under Frameworks and evaluation indicators). For other kura, including kura ā-iwi, kura Māori, and kura motuhake, the review coordinator will discuss the scope of the review at the beginning of the process.
ERO’s frameworks for reviews explain the review process in a simple and transparent way. ERO uses the evaluation indicators when reviewing, so knowing about them will help school trustees, principals, teachers and others understand ERO’s judgements.
Please note that ERO has separate processes for reviews of private kura and schools.
Te Maru o Ngā Kura a Iwi and ERO have developed and completed a trial of methodology and indicators for use in Ngā Kura a Iwi. This information is in draft can be accessed by contacting Te Uepū ā-Motu.
Before a review ERO asks boards of trustees and whānau of kura kaupapa to complete and return a statement and checklist assuring ERO of its compliance with legal obligations and official requirements. You may also find these useful for your own internal evaluation.

We are interested in your experience of the review process. If your school has recently had a review, please take the time to complete our questionnaire.
We invite each school to submit two questionnaires – one representing the views of the board of trustees (through the chairperson) and one representing the views of staff (through the principal). Or you can choose to submit one questionnaire that represents the collective views of both trustees and staff.
Please complete the questionnaire online or you can download a copy Post-Review-Questionnaire.docx
Please email completed Word versions of questionnaires to surveys@ero.govt.nz or post them to Feedback Questionnaire, Evaluation Services, Education Review Office, Box 2799, WELLINGTON 6140.
