Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within 11 months of the Education Review Office and Hautapu School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Hautapu School is located in Hautapu, north-west of Cambridge. The school sits within the rohe of Waikato Tainui. Ngāti Hauā and Ngāti Korokī-Kahukura are tangata whenua and are acknowledged as holding mana whenua of the area. The school caters for students in years 1 to 8.

Hautapu School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are that:

  • learners and their whānau are at the heart of school decision making

  • inspirational education opportunities and outcomes are within reach for every learner

  • quality teaching and leadership have a positive impact on learners and their whānau.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Hautapu School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively the school’s localised curriculum supports equitable outcomes for students.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to:

  • support and improve learning outcomes for students, particularly in writing

  • align the curriculum to community and mana whenua aspirations for learners

  • ensure that educational opportunities are equitable, motivational, and purposeful for learners

  • strengthen and embed cultural capabilities of all staff into everyday practice.

The school expects to see a culture of high expectations in relation to student academic progress and achievement. Building collective capacity will support trustees, leaders, teachers, and the community to focus on the best possible outcomes for all learners.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support the school in its goal to effectively implement its localised curriculum to support equitable outcomes for students:

  • purposeful leadership that evaluates the impact of and responds to school conditions to optimise student outcomes

  • stewardship that works collaboratively with school leadership to set the direction of the school

  • the development of strong community partnerships to enrich opportunities for students.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • providing formal opportunities to seek community aspirations and feedback on how effectively the local curriculum meets the needs of learners

  • engaging in professional development activities to grow culturally responsive practice to support and promote student learning.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
