Barton Rural School

Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within twelve months of the Education Review Office and Barton Rural School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Barton Rural School is a full primary school located in Timaru and caters for students in Years 1 to 8.

Barton Rural Schools strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to:

  • ensure that each student reaches their potential (kairangi)
  • value guardianship of our school and planet for the future (kaitiakitanga)
  • involve and include all stakeholders of our school (whakawhanaungatanga and kōtahitangi).

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on the Barton Rural School website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate to what extent the local curriculum contributes to equity and excellence in achievement, engagement, and wellbeing.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is the school:

  • has identified the need to review its local curriculum and implement the MOE curriculum refresh programme
  • will continue the implementation of structured literacy, digital technology and the integrated inquiry-based approach to teaching science and social studies
  • review will inform a coordinated approach to teaching and learning and reflect the local context.

The school expects to develop programmes which have a clear focus on meeting the abilities, needs, skills and interests of students and supports excellent and equitable achievement outcomes for all students.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support the school in its goal to achieve excellent and equitable achievement outcomes for all students:

  • there is a commitment to growing the capability of the principal and staff to support and promote student achievement and engagement
  • the school has well developed internal evaluation practices which support the progress and achievement of all children.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • implementing classroom and curriculum programmes that respond to students’ identified strengths, needs and prior learning
  • reviewing assessment, moderation, and reporting processes to meet the needs of students, staff, and parents to provide meaningful evidence of achievement and progress, and a basis for determining next steps.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
