Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within 14 months of the Education Review Office and Te Mata School (Havelock North) working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Te Mata School is located in Havelock North, Hawke’s Bay and sits in the rohe of Ngāti Kahungunu iwi. It is

a partner within the Tukituki Kāhui Ako cluster and the school caters for learners in years 1-6.

Te Mata School (Havelock North)’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • a place where learners, staff and whānau have strong relationships focused on a holistic approach to learner wellbeing, hauora and learning
  • the provision of an environment where learners, staff, and whānau are active and valued participants in learning
  • to ensure that every learner has opportunities to learn through a curriculum that values their identity, language and culture.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Te Mata School (Havelock North)’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively Te Mata School is empowering

learners to develop the social, cultural and emotional competencies to care for self, others, establish

positive relationships and respond to challenge.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • that the cultivation of positive prosocial strategies strengthens a platform for learning,

engagement and supports continued positive outcomes for all learners

  • to support the realisation Te Mata School’s values of Kaitiakitanga, Tūrangawaewae and Whakapuāwai.

The school expects to see continued growth in learner outcomes and engagement through the development of social and emotional capabilities.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support the school in its goal to build social, emotional and cultural competencies:

  • evaluation, inquiry and knowledge building processes are purposeful and rigorous
  • collaborative leadership throughout the school sustains a culture of relational trust and ongoing internal capacity building for continuous improvement
  • the inclusion of learner, teacher and community voice informs and shapes decision making.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • the development of a localised wellbeing curriculum promoting student engagement and positive learner outcomes
  • the continued utilisation of wellbeing and academic data to inform targeted teaching and learning
  • engagement in professional learning to grow culturally responsive practices to enhance current wellbeing initiatives.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
