Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within two years of the Education Review Office and St Bernard’s School (Brooklyn) working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

St. Bernard’s School (Brooklyn) is an integrated catholic character school situated in the inner Wellington suburb of Brooklyn. It provides educational opportunities to students in Years 0 to 8.

St Bernard’s School (Brooklyn)’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to experience learning opportunities that:

  • respond to students learning needs and abilities, enabling all students to be self- regulating, self- managing and reflective learners

  • give opportunities to learn te reo Māori and develop understanding of te ao Māori in classroom programmes

  • build their capacity to be responsible for their own learning and develop understanding of their individual needs and strengths.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on St Bernard’s School (Brooklyn)’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate the effectiveness of partnerships with parents to understand and support learning.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • strengthening parents’ engagement with and better understand of student learning and progress

  • to support parents to engage in learning conversations with their child and the teachers

  • introduction of real time sharing of student learning with parents in a way that better enables understanding of, and support for, student learning.

The school expects to see through enhanced partnerships for learning, student’s progress and achievement across the curriculum continuing to improve.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support the school in its goal to strengthen effective learning partnerships with parents.

  • Positive relationships schoolwide that support student engagement, learning and wellbeing.

  • A small school culture that enables all students to actively participate and work collaboratively to succeed across a wide curriculum.

  • Strong school values, underpinned by the Catholic faith, guide meaningful interactions and positive behaviour schoolwide.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise a review of current reporting to parent practices and investigation of possible improvements to the process through:

  • gathering the views and wishes of families in regard to effective learning partnerships

  • investigating further ways to report progress and achievement to parents

  • design an evaluation framework to monitor the impact on improving student outcomes through effective partnerships with parents.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
