Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within 12 months of the Education Review Office and Rototuna Junior High School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website www.ero.govt.nz.

Context

Rototuna Junior High School is located in North Hamilton and caters for students in years 7 to 10. The school shares a campus with Rototuna Senior High School. The school is a recently established ILE (innovative learning environment) school.

Rototuna Junior High School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • improving literacy learning across the curriculum for all students

  • improving the consistency and quality of teaching practice.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Rototuna Junior High School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively assessment processes and practices are supporting equitable and excellent outcomes for students.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • the continued need to build the capability and capacity of the teaching staff to support pedagogy and learning in an ILE context

  • to make better use of achievement data to inform and evaluate the design and delivery of learning programmes.

The school expects to see improvements in the way teachers and leaders collect, analyse and use achievement data to support improved learning outcomes for students.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support it in its goal to strengthen assessment processes and practices to promote equitable and excellent outcomes for students:

  • leaders with diverse knowledge, skills and experience who support capacity building

  • professional learning opportunities that are targeted and draw on internal and external expertise

  • regular consultation and engagement with staff, students, parents and whānau to inform the school’s improvement plans.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • supporting teachers to acquire the knowledge and skills to identify and plan for students’ literacy learning needs

  • consistent use of the data collection systems to track and monitor at-risk students to support the acceleration and progress of these learners, particularly in literacy

  • understanding the impact of professional learning on teaching practice, focused on improving student achievement outcomes.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.

Provision for International Students Report

Background

The Education Review Office reviews schools that are signatories to the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021 established under section 534 of the Education and Training Act 2020.

Findings

Rototuna Junior High School has attested that it complies with all aspects of the Code and has completed an annual self-review of its implementation of the Code.

At the time of this review there was 1 international student attending the school, and no exchange students.

The school is sufficiently prepared to cater for international students who enrol from contributing schools. These students are integrated into the life of the school and receive appropriate language support. Allocated school personnel have oversight of aspects of the provision for international students.

The school is not actively marketing or recruiting overseas. There is a need to more effectively review relevant school systems and processes to ensure there is adequate academic and pastoral provision for international students who enrol from offshore in the future.
