Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within 8 months of the Education Review Office and Scott Point School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Scott Point School is a new school located in Hobsonville in West Auckland. It provides education for students from Year 0 to Year 8.

Scott Point School has experienced rapid roll growth. The school opened at the beginning of 2021 with 100 Years 1 to 8 learners and 12 staff. In 2023, 550 learners attend the school, with 50 staff.

The school has been built within a newly established housing area. The school has a diverse range of ethnicities and cultures with many learners, or their families born overseas.

Scott Point School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are to:

  • provide a future focussed curriculum where teaching, learning and assessment meet the needs of today’s learner to become tomorrow’s global citizen

  • promote holistic positive health and wellbeing for all

  • continually develop an innovative environment that is vibrant, sustainable and valued

  • recognise and celebrate the identities, language and culture of the Scott Point Community.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Scott Point School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching pedagogy and learning strategies in writing to enhance and improve student learning outcomes.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to:

  • enhance and improve schoolwide student writing progress, achievement and learning outcomes

  • meet the needs of the high number of English of Other Language Learners (ESOL)

  • provide schoolwide opportunities for effective professional development in writing, with a focus on sentence and paragraph structures as well as imaginative and creative content.

The school expects to see:

  • improved teacher efficacy and pedagogy in the teaching of writing

  • increased student agency and creativity in writing

  • student writing progress, achievement and learning outcomes enhanced.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support their goal to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching pedagogy and learning strategies in writing to enhance and improve student learning outcomes:

  • the school embraces the diverse community and fosters learners' sense of identity and well-being

  • consistent schoolwide professional development for teachers, effectively utilizing strategies with access to quality writing resources throughout the school

  • expert leaders of literacy teachers across the school to support staff in the teaching of writing

  • targeted ESOL programmes provided by Learning Assistants, guided by the class teachers in each Kāinga to meet the needs of ESOL learners

  • collaborative leadership is continually adapting implementation of the school’s strategic goals that enacts the school’s vision and values.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • consistent induction of teachers new to the school to teach writing effectively

  • consistent transition into literacy programmes for all new learners

  • effective pedagogy in writing including developing literacy language to be used across the school

  • ensure student agency is evident across the school.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
