All About Children - 51 Mahia is one of 15 services that are part of Kids World Childcare Limited. A centre manager supports a team of qualified teachers and support staff. An area manager, marketing manager and operations manager provide support for services on the Kids World Childcare group. The community is ethnically diverse, with a large number of Māori children enrolled.
The service curriculum respects and supports the right of each child to be confident in their own culture and encourages children to understand and respect other cultures. Children’s preferences are respected, and they are involved in decisions about their learning experiences. The curriculum is informed by assessment, planning, and evaluation (documented and undocumented) that demonstrates an understanding of children’s learning, their interests, whānau, and life contexts.
Children are given the opportunity to develop knowledge and an understanding of the cultural heritages of both parties to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. The service curriculum is inclusive, and responsive to children as confident and competent learners.
A next step is to:
Increase the visibility of how teachers respond to children’s interests and dispositions, and to parents’ aspirations, in curriculum assessment, planning and evaluation documentation.
The next ERO review is likely to be an Akarangi | Quality Evaluation.

As part of an Akanuku | Assurance Review ERO assesses whether the regulatory standards are being met. In particular, ERO looks at a service’s systems for managing the following areas that have a potentially high impact on children's wellbeing:
emotional safety (including positive guidance and child protection)
physical safety (including supervision; sleep procedures; accidents; medication; hygiene; excursion policies and procedures)
suitable staffing (including qualification levels; safety checking; teacher certification; ratios)
relevant evacuation procedures and practices.
As part of an Akanuku | Assurance Review ERO also gathers and records evidence through:
discussions with those involved in the service
consideration of relevant documentation, including the implementation of health and safety systems
observations of the environment/premises, curriculum implementation and teaching practice.

At the time of the review, ERO found the service was taking reasonable steps to meet regulatory standards.
This is the first review of Choicekids Mahia Rd 51, which opened in 2017. It is one of eight Choicekids services in South Auckland. Its community, families and staff are culturally diverse. The largest groups on the roll are Māori, Pacific and Indian. The centre provides for children in two rooms, according to age. Infants and toddlers have separate indoor and outdoor spaces.
ERO’s 2018 special review of the Choicekids organisation identified a high number of areas for improvement. The service was placed on a provisional licence and monitored by the Ministry of Education. It was returned to a full licence in April 2018. Choicekids personnel continue to support the service’s ongoing improvement, particularly in relation to curriculum development and implementation.
This review was part of a cluster of eight reviews in the ChoiceKids organisation.
Ongoing self-review and professional development for the manager and teachers helps the service maintain and improve the quality of its operations. Parents and staff have opportunities to contribute to the development and review of the service’s operational documents.
The curriculum promotes children’s independence and acknowledges the unique place of Māori as tangata whenua. Children are provided with a range of experiences and opportunities to enhance and extend their learning and development, both indoors and outdoors, individually, and in groups.
Processes are in place for maintaining the safety, hygiene, and condition of premises, furniture, furnishings, fittings and equipment. An annual plan and budget guide the service’s operation.
The next ERO review is likely to be an Education Review.
