Cuddly Kiwis Childcare Centre is one of two services privately owned and operated. The owner is responsible for governance, management and daily operations. The centre manager leads a team of three teachers. The service provides for toddlers to school age children. A small number of Māori children are enrolled.
Children and families from diverse cultural backgrounds benefit from the centre’s caring environment that celebrates and responds to their identity, languages and cultures. Teachers work in partnership with children, parents and whānau. Leaders advocate positively for and alongside children, parents and whānau to ensure all children have access to quality, inclusive education and care.
Children demonstrate a strong sense of belonging and cultural connectedness. Home languages and celebrations are fostered, respected and promoted. Teachers are culturally responsive and provide an inclusive curriculum that incorporates te reo me ngā tikanga Māori in daily practice.
Children have opportunities to develop social competence skills. Teachers support children’s exploration and play through calm, slow-paced routines, and a well-resourced environment.
Teachers have a good understanding of assessment for learning. Children’s assessment records demonstrate teachers’ promotion of holistic learning, underpinned by Te Whāriki, the early childhood curriculum. Teachers identify children’s dispositions and skills, and plan programmes to extend them. Evaluation of the curriculum is helping teachers to achieve their priorities for children’s learning. Provision of learning opportunities to foster complex learning based on children's interests is required to extend the curriculum.
Leaders have a deliberate, strategic focus on professional development. Their shared leadership approach contributes to teachers taking professional and collective responsibility for aspects of daily operations. Leaders engage in deliberate, systematic review and evaluation processes. They evaluate and monitor the impact of changes relating to policies, practices, and processes that promote equitable outcomes for children. Evaluation processes are not yet sufficiently embedded to sustain quality curriculum practices.
Cuddly Kiwis Childcare Everglade will include the following actions in its Quality Improvement Planning:
Leaders and teachers to identify, implement and evaluate learning experiences and teaching strategies to add complexity to children’s thinking and learning.
Leaders and teachers to continue to grow their understanding and use of evaluation for sustained improvement to practices that enhance outcomes for all children.

At the time of the review, ERO found the service was taking reasonable steps to meet regulatory standards.
Cuddly Kiwis Childcare Everglade is one of two centres managed by the same service provider. This is the first review of the service since a change of ownership.
The new owners have worked with the Ministry of Education to upgrade the premises and outdoor playground. They have made progress addressing the areas of non-compliance identified in the 2018 ERO report.
The manager is an experienced early childhood teacher and leads a team of four staff, including two other registered teachers. The staff team reflects the cultural diversity of the community.
The curriculum is inclusive and responsive to children as confident and competent learners whose preferences are respected. It acknowledges and respects Māori as tangata whenua and supports each child to be confident in their own culture. The language-rich environment supports children’s learning and the provision of different types of experiences.
Parents have opportunities to communicate with staff about their children’s learning. They have access to a range of information, and contribute to centre development and review. A philosophy statement and annual plan guide centre operations. A system of regular appraisal is implemented across both centres.
