Glenview School (Hamilton)

Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within ten months of the Education Review Office and Glenview School (Hamilton) working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Glenview School is located in Hamilton and provides education for students in Years 1-6. A new principal was appointed in 2020 and a new assistant principal during 2021. The school has strong links to its local Glenview community and whānau.

Glenview School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • to develop culturally responsive practices that normalise Te Ao Māori
  • to embed highly effective teaching practice that is responsive to meeting the learning needs of all students
  • to strengthen the partnership for parents and whānau to be aware of and involved in their children’s learning.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Glenview School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively programmes and practices are accelerating learning and improving outcomes for all students. Supporting Māori students to achieve success as Māori and challenging students to excel and achieve excellence are ongoing priorities for the school.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • the school’s commitment to maintaining a strategic focus on equitable outcomes for Māori students and students with additional needs
  • the opportunity it provides to ascertain the impact of professional learning and teaching practice on the achievement outcomes for all groups of students
  • the school’s focus on the quality of opportunities for students to be supported or challenged in their learning.

The school expects to see actions implemented to further strengthen equitable outcomes and academic success for all students.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to enable equitable and excellent outcomes for all learners:

  • leadership of learning that collaboratively develops and pursues the school’s vision, goals and targets for equity and excellence
  • school values that support a positive culture for learning and high levels of student engagement
  • commitment to ongoing professional learning that supports shared understanding and the consistency of teaching practices.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • strengthening the use of evaluation and inquiry to sustain improvement in outcomes for all learners
  • gathering Māori student and whānau voice to support a shared understanding of Māori success as Māori and to further develop a culturally inclusive and responsive local curriculum
  • continuing to build teacher capability to provide rich, authentic learning opportunities that enable students to excel in their learning.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
