Context
Omihi School is located in Omihi, North Canterbury and provides education for students in Years 1 to 8.
Omihi School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learnings are:

celebrate tamariki and their individual pathways by implementing a culturally responsive local curriculum, extend teacher capability in structured literacy and embed Positive Education

engage with the local environment and community to implement rich, linked student inquiry and achieve Enviroschool silver status.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate the positive difference that approaches in teaching literacy are making for students’ learning, particularly in writing.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is to:

improve achievement in writing, particularly for boys in Years 2 to 8, with a specific focus on deeper features
-
develop a shared understanding and ensure consistency of good literacy practices across the school, to ensure sustainability when staff change
-
support new students enrolling with lower-than-expected literacy rates to accelerate their learning.
The school expects to see a consistent approach to the teaching of writing across the school, with a shared understanding of best practice. Staff will have a greater understanding of practices that best support accelerated progress, particularly for boys in Years 2 to 8.
