Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within twelve months of the Education Review Office and St Mary’s Catholic School (Ōtorohanga) working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz.

Context

St Mary’s Catholic School is a state integrated primary school located in Ōtorohanga and provides education for students in Years 1-8. The school has strong links to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish.

St Mary’s Catholic School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • providing great educational opportunities and outcomes for all learners

  • continuing to build and embed teacher capability around learner agency

  • enabling meaningful and reciprocal whānau engagement.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on St Mary’s Catholic School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how well school conditions contribute to raising student achievement particularly through targeted action in writing and mathematics. The school is aware of the need to: monitor student progress for responsive planning; continue to build teaching capability in formative assessment practice; and extend positive relationships with parents and whānau into quality learning partnerships.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • the need to address the school's achievement challenges and improve academic success for identified students

  • the opportunity it provides to build leadership and teacher capability in data literacy and formative assessment practices

  • the school’s commitment to removing barriers to learning and empowering parents and whānau in reciprocal learning partnerships.

The school expects to see deliberate actions implemented to increase student engagement and improve progress and achievement in learning.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to raise overall levels of student achievement:

  • effective communication and relational trust that develops shared knowledge in ways that promote innovation

  • allocation of sufficient resources that support improvement initiatives and build collective capacity

  • positive school culture that enables student wellbeing and resilience.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • strengthening the analysis of data to support responsive planning and ongoing evaluation of actions to raise achievement

  • developing shared understanding of effective formative assessment to enable consistency of practice across the team

  • implementing a range of processes to enhance positive partnerships for learning with whānau.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
