Westmount School - Auckland Campus - 18/12/2015

On the basis of the information obtained during the review, ERO considers that Westmount School meets the criteria for registration as a private school set out in the Education Act 1989.

1 Background

The Chief Review Officer has a statutory duty to report on the performance of private schools throughout New Zealand.

Section 35I of the Education Act 1989, requires the Education Review Office (ERO) to review fully registered private schools, and to report to the Ministry of Education on whether each school continues to meet the criteria for full registration.

This review report was prepared in accordance with standard procedures approved by the Chief Review Officer.

2 Criteria for Registration

Westmount School, established by the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church in 1993, consists of 11 campuses and 12 satellites nationally. The Westmount School National Trust governs the school and a principal team of three regional principals and an academic principal provides professional leadership for all teaching staff. The Auckland campus regional principal has responsibility for campuses in Auckland, the Waikato, Northland and Argentina. The school is now part of the global One School organisation.

The Auckland campus of Westmount School in Mangere, Auckland, provides education for students from Years 3 to 13. The school is guided by its special character, values statement, and principles. Under the direction of the National Trust, the educational content of teaching programmes is based on The New Zealand Curriculum.

The Auckland campus continues to provide suitable premises, staffing, equipment, curriculum and standards of tuition. There have been significant developments since the 2011 ERO report to heighten expectations of learners and to strengthen their pathways into higher learning.

Premises continue to be well maintained and provide appropriate learning environments. The Auckland campus has introduced flexible learning centres in the senior and junior areas that support the school’s focus on selfdirected learning and on the school’s motto of ‘Learning to Learn’.

The school provides suitable staffing and standards of tuition. Teachers are well qualified and the school builds teacher capability through high quality internal and external professional development.

Teachers use assessment information effectively to support students to reach their goals. Parents are well informed about their children’s progress and achievement through regular face-to-face meetings and written reports. Analysed achievement data allow leaders and the National Trust to make effective decisions about resources for learning.

There is a strong emphasis on, and many opportunities for, students to participate in self-directed learning. Senior students have access to face-to-face and distance learning by bringing their own e-learning devices and using the school’s network to access subject experts across the school’s campuses.

The school has established a careers programme that supports students with decision-making about their future education and career pathways. All students are encouraged to gain a senior graduation certificate and complete the prerequisites for further studies.

The school’s managers have attested that they comply with the provisions of section 35G in respect to their being fit and proper persons to manage the school.

3 Other Obligations

There are good systems in place for the school’s managing body to be assured that its other statutory obligations are met.

4 Conclusion

On the basis of the information obtained during the review, ERO considers that Westmount School meets the criteria for registration as a private school set out in the Education Act 1989.
