Background
The Chief Review Officer under Sections 328E – 328 H of the Education Act 1989 has the authority to review all hostels as long as there are boarders in the hostel from one or more schools where they are enrolled.
Context
Te Kainga Wānanga, an Inzone Education Foundation Hostel, accommodates up to 55 male boarders. The hostel is located in Epsom, Auckland. Owned and managed by the Inzone Education Foundation, it provides accommodation to Māori and Pacific students who attend Auckland Boys’ Grammar. This is one of two hostels in central Auckland owned and managed by the Inzone Education Foundation.
Findings
The hostel manager and hostel owner have attested that they have met the requirements of the Hostel Regulations 2005.
The Inzone Education Foundation Trust Board and staff actively support Kainga Wānanga boarders to develop Māori cultural competence and confidence in a kaupapa Māori setting. The boarders display self-confidence and pride in their environment when engaging with others in the hostel setting.
The Inzone Education Foundation Board’s vision is to promote all round excellence with a particular focus on supporting boarders’ learning. Regular liaison occurs between key hostel staff and staff at Auckland Boys’ Grammar through Advisory Committee meetings and the recent hostel appointment of an academic director. Boarders are given every encouragement to achieve academic success. Boarders feel well cared for, safe and secure in a nurturing, caring whānau environment.
Formal documentation of self-review is the current and appropriate focus for improvement across many aspects of hostel operations. The trust board has documented specific timelines for this task to be completed.
