This report presents examples of good practice in student engagement and achievement. The examples come from a sample of secondary schools, rated decile 5 or below with rolls of 200 students or more, who had better outcomes for students than other similar schools. In Aotearoa, Māori-medium education experienced significant disruption when the outbreak of Covid-19 forced kura to close their doors, and whānau and kaiako to adjust to home schooling and distance learning. The survey was developed to elicit perspectives of principals involved in the initial implementation of the Schools: Evaluation for Improvement Approach in 75 schools across New Zealand. The survey items were developed in collaboration with the Education Review Office to ensure questions reflected key domains of interest. The survey incorporated Likert scale items, and open-ended items.
