Background
This Profile Report was written within six months of the Education Review Office and Hastings Intermediate working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. Context
Hastings Intermediate provides education for Years 7 and 8 students. A new principal was appointed in Term 2 2022, along with a new deputy and assistant principal. These positions were internal promotions.
Hastings Intermediate’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

to continue to lead for equity and excellence

to strengthen educationally powerful connections and relationships to raise achievement

to meet the needs of all learners in a culture of aspiration, encouragement and opportunity

to continue to develop and strengthen a responsive and localised curriculum.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively the school is engaging with whānau, hapū and iwi to build educationally powerful connections to raise student achievement.
The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

the school is aware that whānau involvement is key to improved and equitable learner outcomes

the school has identified the need to develop an ongoing partnership for learning with all whānau to raise achievement

to build on existing relationships with hapū and iwi to positively impact on learner outcomes.
The school expects to see:

increased levels of wellbeing amongst students, through relationships with whānau, to support engagement in learning

a team approach to support students to achieve their potential.
Strengths

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community.
