Hastings Intermediate

Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within six months of the Education Review Office and Hastings Intermediate working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Hastings Intermediate provides education for Years 7 and 8 students. A new principal was appointed in Term 2 2022, along with a new deputy and assistant principal. These positions were internal promotions.

Hastings Intermediate’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • to continue to lead for equity and excellence

  • to strengthen educationally powerful connections and relationships to raise achievement

  • to meet the needs of all learners in a culture of aspiration, encouragement and opportunity

  • to continue to develop and strengthen a responsive and localised curriculum.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Hastings Intermediate’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively the school is engaging with whānau, hapū and iwi to build educationally powerful connections to raise student achievement.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • the school is aware that whānau involvement is key to improved and equitable learner outcomes

  • the school has identified the need to develop an ongoing partnership for learning with all whānau to raise achievement

  • to build on existing relationships with hapū and iwi to positively impact on learner outcomes.

The school expects to see:

  • increased engagement with whānau, hapū and iwi focused on learning

  • increased levels of wellbeing amongst students, through relationships with whānau, to support engagement in learning

  • a team approach to support students to achieve their potential.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths in its goal to build educationally powerful partnerships with whānau, hapū and iwi for improved student outcomes:

  • leaders who are collaborative, responsive and focused on raising outcomes for all learners

  • the established and ongoing partnership with Kāhui Ako

  • established pastoral care systems to support further development of educationally based partnerships.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • engagement with whānau, hapū and iwi to improve learning outcomes

  • collaborating with Kāhui Ako to support the focus on partnerships for learning

  • analysis of pastoral care data to inform next steps.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
