Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within 12 months of the Education Review Office and Melville Primary School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website www.ero.govt.nz.

Context

Melville Primary School is located in South Hamilton and provides education for students in years 0 to 6.  The school offers bi-lingual Māori and English medium education. The school appointed a first-time principal who began at the start of 2021.

Melville Primary School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • to accelerate the progress and achievement of students and reduce the number of students achieving below their expected curriculum level

  • to deliver authentic learning programmes with an emphasis on Te Ara Whakamana

  • to ensure that the school environment continues to be a safe place for ākonga and kaiako.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Melville Primary School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively the school is strengthening student wellbeing to improve student achievement data and raise student achievement outcomes.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • achievement data prior to 2021 showed that a high percentage of students achieved below their expected curriculum level

  • pastoral data prior to 2021 showed a significant and ongoing pattern of behaviour incidents.

The school expects to see:

  • the development of a whole school behaviour management process and shared expectations

  • an environment where learners, teachers and whānau feel safe and respected

  • increased staff capability to support improved achievement outcomes for all learners through engaging and authentic programmes

  • students experiencing an increased sense of belonging and connection to school, whānau, friends and the community.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support the school in its goal to strengthen student wellbeing to improve student achievement data and raise student achievement outcomes:

  • leadership that has a relentless focus on improving outcomes for all learners

  • the development and implementation in 2021 of a whole-school behaviour process and shared expectations

  • an increased focus on learning relationships between teachers and students.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • building teachers’ capability in understanding and using reliable student achievement data to accelerate those students who are below expected curriculum levels

  • continuing to build a school culture that is mana enhancing to support students’ identity and sense of belonging

  • establishing educational partnerships with parents and whānau to enable them to play an active role in their child’s learning.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
