Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within twelve months of the Education Review Office and Gisborne Central School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Gisborne Central School is located in the heart of the Gisborne suburb of Whataupoko and caters for learners in Years 1-6.

Gisborne Central School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • to enjoy academic success and achieve to the best of their ability

  • to have the knowledge to make good choices about their health and wellbeing

  • to develop learning partnerships within the community

  • to have the skills and knowledge to interact positively with others.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Gisborne Central School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively professional learning in writing is supporting continuous improvement for all learners.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • writing is an identified area of growth for the school

  • that professional learning is sustainable over time and continues to grow teacher confidence and capability leading to improved outcomes for learners.

The school expects to see improved writing outcomes for learners through embedded effective practice.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support the school in its goal to improve learner outcomes in writing:

  • a schoolwide culture of continuous improvement that promotes equitable outcomes for all students

  • trustees and leadership work collaboratively to realise the school’s strategic goals through the targeted support of internal and external expertise

  • a collegial culture that builds and sustains trust, collective efficacy and teacher agency.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • a continued focus on equity for all learners in writing, particularly boys

  • the monitoring and support of learners at transition points within the school

  • leaders and teachers seeking evidence about the effectiveness of professional learning in terms of change in teacher practice, leading to improved learner outcomes.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
