In 2011, ERO evaluated the quality of science teaching and learning, its place within the curriculum and its relationship to literacy and numeracy teaching. The evaluation focused on Years 5 to 8 in 100 schools. This report documents the findings of this evaluation.

New research from the Education Review Office (ERO) has found that disruptive behaviour in New Zealand’s classrooms is worse than other countries, is a rapidly growing problem, and is getting in the way of learning.

ERO evaluated preparedness to work with the National Standards within The New Zealand Curriculum in 228 schools during Terms 1 and 2, 2010. ERO found that most schools were well prepared or had preparation under way, and in many cases the preparations focused on aligning existing benchmarks and expectations with the standards.

New research from the Education Review Office (ERO) looked at how school classrooms up and down the country are becoming more ethnically diverse and found that by 2043, a quarter of our learners will be from ethnic communities. In Auckland nearly half (43 percent) of learners will be Asian.

In 2023, teaching Aotearoa New Zealand’s Histories (ANZ Histories) became compulsory for students in Years 1-10. ANZ Histories is part of the refreshed Social Sciences learning area. The Education Review Office, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, wanted to know how the implementation of ANZ Histories and the wider Social Sciences is going. This report describes what we found about the changes and the impacts for students, teachers, and parents and whānau. It also describes the lessons that can help inform the ongoing implementation of the Refreshed Curriculum.

State or state-integrated schools/kura that are new, merged, newly state-integrated or changing their status have a New School Assurance Review after they have completed their Readiness Review. We do the review within the first year of the school’s operation.
