ERO’s Judgement

At the time of the review, ERO found the service was taking reasonable steps to meet regulatory standards.

Background

This is the first ERO review of BestStart Glen Eden which opened in 2019. A professional practice leader and an area manager support the centre manager to lead a team of four qualified teachers and four teachers in training. There are three learning areas for children from infants to school age. Children attending are from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

Summary of Review Findings

The service curriculum is inclusive, and responsive to children as confident and competent learners. Assessment, planning, and evaluation demonstrates an understanding of children’s learning, their interests, whānau, and life contexts. Children’s preferences are respected, and they are involved in decisions about their learning experiences. The design and layout of the premises support the provision of different types of indoor and outdoor experiences.

A philosophy statement and annual plan guides service operations. Teacher appraisal and self-review processes are established. Health and safety procedures are monitored, and changes made when required.

Next steps include:

• to continue to develop the local curriculum to reflect what is important to children, whānau, kaiako and the wider community
• to increase opportunities for children to listen to and speak te reo Māori in meaningful contexts.
