There are sufficient spaces for equipment and material to be stored safely. Stored equipment and materials can be easily and safely accessed by adults, and where practicable, by children.

How to show you are complying

You must make sure there is enough space to safely store equipment and materials used both indoors and outdoors in your service.

Children should be able to access equipment and materials to support their learning and build independence. This includes space for children to easily access their own belongings. This helps them take responsibility for their things.

Storage spaces can include:

• open shelving so that children choose materials themselves

• cupboards and drawers for equipment and materials that are rotated into use

• rooms for supplies like art materials

• outdoor sheds and storage boxes

• lockable storage for hazardous materials or items not suitable for children.

When planning storage for safety:

• arrange storage so it’s easy to access, reduces congestion, and keeps everyone safe

• avoid stacking items on high shelves or over stacking the inside of cupboards to prevent the risk of items falling when accessing them

• consider the earthquake proofing of stored items.
